Cookin’ on our Wood Cookstove

My adventure with cooking on a wood stove started years ago when the children were still very young.  We had just bought a wood stove at an auction to save money on our heating bills (that was before we were totally off the grid like we are now) and that little stove put off great amounts of heat.  I remember being so proud about being able to start my own fires!  Well, that stove top was so hot that we put kettles of water on to humidify the air and use for tea water. Then I thought that maybe I could heat up some beans on the stove top, too! Now that was a big hit - heat my house and heat my beans at the same time! Talk about two birds with one stone. Wow, what a stove! So heating beans led to cooking beans, soups, stews and more all on that little wood heater bought at an auction for little or nothing. I loved it and I was hooked on cooking on a wood stove.

A few years passed and we were able to get a real wood cookstove-a Kitchen Queen.  It is huge, takes about 6 or 8 men to move it, but it is the homesteaders dream of cooking and heating efficiently and frugally.  We love it!  I have been cooking on it for 15 years now and not a season goes by that we haven't used it to its full extent. That stove has been the heart of our home and has done more than heat our house. It has provided warm meals on the stove top, hot bread from the oven, boiled our water for washing dishes and taking our baths, dried our herbs, simmered the tea, raised the bread, heated irons for wrinkled clothes, baked our beans, baked our pies, melted bees wax for our candle making, dried our clothes, warmed new born puppies, chicks and more! Most of our recipes have been tested and tried on our cookstove, but they have been written in a format easily used for any type of stove you may have, although, if you have never tasted food cooked with wood the old fashioned way - boy, are y’all missing out.   There is definitely a delicious difference in the taste.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts on your cookstove. My family is transitioning from suburban life to homesteading. The other day my husband suggested we get a cookstove rather than a woodstove when we move to our land. I wasn't too sure, but now you've encouraged me! :)

We had a wood cook stove when we first got married. Being young and wanting modern appliances we got rid of it. Now that I am older and wiser I wish I had it back. Around here it is almost impossible to put one in your house as the house insurance companies won't insure your house any more. They say they are a fire hazard. I keep dreaming someday I will have one. Food just tastes better in a wood oven. I love your blog and have been following for quite some time.
Take care
Carol

We met last year on the Hickman County Arts and Ag tour when your were at Leegacy Farm. I think of your family often and was listening to your CD this am homesteading has been a dream of mine for the last 45 years and I never tire of planning and learning in hopes it will be a reality. I have a question (or two or three) about logistics of a lifestyle like yours. One has to do with insurance. Do you have health insurance or home or car insurance. I can figure out how to live without having to buy things but insurance is expensive and I'm wondering if you choose to do without or if there are other options out there

My husband bought me a Mealmaster Cookstove in 2004. In the winter I cook on it and it also heat with it, we also have a waste oil boiler for our heat but it barely runs in the winter because of the stove. We have propane for our gas stove that I use in the summer months. I couldn't imagine paying six dollars a gallon for propane due to the shortage from the severe cold weather this winter. I have all of your dvd's and music cd's and your recipe book and also purchased them for my 24 year old daughter. I have learned so much from your dvd's. My husband would walk in the living room and ask me what I was watching and he would say, "Never mind, I already know." LOL

Thanks for sharing. As a newer family to learning to homestead we have so much to learn. I would love to hear more about the process of coming off the grid. Perhaps a DVD on what and how to change things to make that happen would be an awesome addition to your collection (and mine - since we own all of them) Blessings!

Thanks for sharing! My husband and I have been searching for a good wood cookstove for a couple of years now. We are slowly working our way into an off-grid life. I collect as many items as I can find at yard sales and antique stores. Still waiting on that cookstove....

You ladies are women after my own heart! I have always, for as long as I can remember, wanted to live the kind of life you ladies do! You are inspiring, and I admire your dedication to your faith and your simplicity. I feel truly blessed to have discovered your DVDs (at the local library, no less), website, and blog, and will be ordering my own set and cookbook as soon as I am able. God is doing miraculous things in my life right now, and I believe He led me to find you and your way of life! Thank you, and God bless each of you!
