Frequently Asked Questions

Questions About Soap Making:

Questions About Bread Making

  • Q: What type of flour do the West Ladies use for bread making?
  • A: We use hard white wheat and it works the best for us. Golden 86 and Prairie Gold are good wheat brands. We also use Unbleached White Flour to help make the bread lighter.
  • Q: What kind of oil do the West Ladies use for bread making?
  • A: In the DVD we use olive oil, but coconut oil or lard is healthier and works just as well. If you use coconut oil, use 1/3 less than you would for olive oil.

Questions About Candle Making

  • Q: Where do the West Ladies get beeswax?
  • A: Local bee keepers, www.glorybeefoods.com and other bee keeping or craft suppliers.
  • Q: How much wax do I need to make the taper candles?
  • A: This depends on how many you want to make! Depending on the size of the vat you use, 6 lbs. of wax makes 4 pairs of 7" long tapers or 3 pairs of 10" long tapers. Half of the wax gives you depth to dip your candles in, the other half becomes the candles. Remember to have extra wax melting to add to the vat as you watch your candles "grow". One way to determine the amount of wax you need to fill your vat, is to fill it with water (or line your dipping vat with a plastic bag then fill if you want to keep the vat dry). Measure the amount of water for each 1 1/2 cup of water you need 1 pound of wax.
  • Q: Where do I find candle making supplies?
  • A: Glory Bee Foods and other beekeeping suppliers or craft suppliers.
  • Q: Do I need filtered or unfiltered wax?
  • A: Unfiltered is cheaper and you can easily filter it by melting and straining through a t-shirt.
  • Q: What's a good price for beeswax?
  • A: The last time we bought beeswax was back in '08 and it was $3.75 a lb. We always buy our beeswax from local bee keepers and so this price may vary if you buy it from different venue's.
  • Q: Where do I get 24 ply cotton wicking?
  • A: Glory Bee Foods and other beekeeping suppliers and candle making suppliers.
